# Define Decimals, Converting Decimals to Fractions

## Define Decimals

Decimal number simply means a set of number where there is a decimal point. But before you go ahead with decimals, you need to know the basics of place value.

When we write any number, its position is very important. Each position gives a different meaning and counting. Here is the diagram which helps us understand about place value,

Therefore, as shown in the above diagram the number from the left hand side gets bigger.

## Define Decimals

In simple words we can define decimal as based on 10.

For example: 6.23.

In the above example, numbers to the left hand side to the point is a whole number (in our case it is 6). Hence any number which come further left side of the point will get ten times bigger.

The 1st digit that come right hand side of the point is 1/10 which means tenths. So the every number comes after this would get ten times smaller.

So, with the help of decimals we can place numbers to the right or left of a decimal point for indicating whether the number is greater or lesser than one.

What is 3.6?

In the above decimal, number 3 is whole number and number 6 means tenths. We can also say here, 6 = 6/10.

## Converting Decimals to Fractions

The decimal number can be a fraction when the denominator is a number like 10, 100 or 1000.

Let us learn an easy way to convert decimal to fraction,

**Example 1:** Convert 2.6 into fraction.

**Solution:**

You may see on the right side of the decimal point there is just one number, which is 2.

So, we can write it in fraction form as 26/10

**Example 2:** Convert 24.65 into fraction.

**Solution:**

You may see on the right side of the decimal point there is just two numbers, which are 2 and 4.

So, we can write it in fraction form as 2465/100
